Department of Geology

About Department :

The Department of Geology was established on 2016 , headed by Dr. Meraj Alam. This department is situated in the lap of the fascinating natural laboratory of Central India, surrounded by Deccan Trap hills of Satpura. This mighty hill of Satpura at Jabalpur (only 210 km away from the department) is a kind of natural museum bearingthe unique fossils of Dianasour’seggs, so can be considered as a Jurassic Park !Natural occurrences of all suchrocks and fossil records, only around the department gives a unique opportunity to our students to get a strong training on field Geology which can make them confident enough to look forward for several employment opportunities in the wide range of industries and research organizations. Geologists play key roles in the search and extraction of mineral deposits, coal, petroleum and even building materials. Easy accessibility of the coal fields like Sohagpur, Korba, and Bauxite mines like in Katni and Bilaspur, which surround the department, is a golden opportunity for the students of the department to develop themselves from a learner to a geological professional.

This department has competent and distinguished faculties in almost all major branches of the Geology like Structure and Tectonics, Geomorphology and Neotectonics, Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Crystallography, Remote Sensing and photo Geology, Paleontology and Oceanography. Research and development being the root of the fundamentals of sciences, all the faculties in the department are keen to develop new theories based on observations, modelling and experiments.Department pursues researches by collaboration and regular interaction with national and international experts and groups. For greater scientific achievements, department is also engaged in multi-disciplinary and interdepartmental interaction and regular exchange of ideas. The faculties of the Department also possess membership of several international scientific bodies like Mineralogical Society of UK, Paleontology and Paleoclimatology, European Geophysical Union etc.

Despite of being merely a one year old Department, the laboratories in the Department are moderately well equipped with several instruments like petrographic and paleontological microscopes along with samples and thin sections of all major rock types, minerals and fossils from theirtype areas and other geologically important locations of India and abroad. This collection of samples and infrastructurerelated to equipments is continuing to grow very fast with the support of university and funds raised from the individual research projects of the faculties.

The department offers 2 year M.Sc in Geology course following semester wise evaluation system along with rigorous internal assessment and classroom performances of the students. Believing in the Choice Based Credit Systems (CBCS), Department allows its students of first year to take two courses of their choice from any other departments of the university as well. It is of immense pleasure to mention that only with one year’s short journey of the Department, ithas been successful to attract students from all the corners of the country and out of which one student of the final year from first batch of the department successfully presented his research outcomes in an international platform like American Geological Union fall meeting held in America.
