Department of Social Work

About Department

The Department of Social Work was established on 5 October 2016. It commenced its journey with two faculty members and an initial cohort of 10 Post Graduate students. PhD program was introduced in 2018. At present the Department has a strength of six faculty members. The department has successfully taught seven batches of Postgraduate students in completing their Masters in Social Work (MSW) and three batches of PhD scholars. IGNTU, being a Central University, the department attracts a student from different states of India. So far, students from eleven states have enrolled in the Department.

The faculty members of the department are alumni of prestigious institutions from across the country. They have been recognised for their academic excellence and are deeply committed towards teaching and research. They have secured research and consultancy projects from national funding agencies and corporate houses. These projects are related to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and other areas of social research.

Since its inception the Department has consistently achieved remarkable academic and professional milestones. Several students have cleared competitive examinations such as the UGC-NET/JRF.  They have secured employment in both public and private sector. Many students are also employed in foreign countries. Furthermore, alumni have gained admission to PhD programmes in esteemed institutions like University of Delhi, IRMA, NIMHANS, CIP, Ranchi and GGU. Few of our PhD scholars are now working as faculty members in renowned private Higher Education Institutions.

The Department facilitates campus placements and a significant number of students secure placements each year. Many students have also been awarded the Gandhi Fellowship. Academia-industry collaboration is another significant initiative of the department. Students are provided firsthand experience through interactions with social work practitioners from different fields. Additionally, exposure visits to corporate organisations and NGOs further enhance the knowledge of the students and enable them to gain practical understanding of the field.

The students are encouraged to actively participate in both academic activities and community engagement initiatives. The Department has undertaken extensive community outreach programmes, focusing on raising awareness about education, health, and livelihoods in nearby villages. Additionally, it has provided skill development training to enhance employability and community well-being. With a strong emphasis on integrating academic rigor with institutional social responsibility, the Department of Social Work has cultivated socially conscious professionals dedicated to community development. Through its ongoing research, educational endeavors, and community engagement, the Department continues to expand its impact and contribution to society.
