About Department

About the Department

The Department of Geography started at the beginning of the University in 2008, along with the other social sciences. The establishment of the Department was the need of the hour in a remotely located tribal area. Geography is a popular subject of study and has ample opportunities for research in both physical and human aspects, with its unique topography, society, and culture. Previously, the Geography Department was under the faculty of Social Science, but it has been under the faculty of Earth Science since 2017. Dr. Janki Prasad is the founder faculty member of the Department. He joined on January 1, 2009, and three years later, a well-experienced Professor Haushila Prasad joined as the Professor and was heading the Department till his retirement in 2017. Two faculty members, namely Dr Chandramauli and Dr Richa Chaturvedi, joined the department as Assistant Professors in 2012; now both have been promoted to Associate Professor and Professor, respectively. Dr. Rambooshan Tiwari joined as Assistant Professor in the Department after the retirement of Professor H. Prasad in 2017. Dr. Tiwari left the Department in 2024 and joined as an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography, BHU Varanasi. At present, department is having 3 faculty members with expertise in frontier areas of research. The Department of Geography is known for better teaching and research in Central India since its establishment. Department of Geography offers a three-year undergraduate (U.G.), a four-year Research/Honours undergraduate (U.G.) course. It also offers M.A./ M.Sc. in Geography with both two-year and one-year programs to suit different student needs, as well as a comprehensive Ph.D. program. Initially, the undergraduate (honours) course was introduced in the Department in 2008. Subsequently, the Master's program was started in 2013, and the Ph.D. program in 2016. There are 16 UG batches and 11 Master's batches that have passed out till date. The Ph.D. on different topics is awarded to 11 candidates, and 13 are pursuing their doctoral research. The Department has facilities of a GIS Lab, survey instruments, and classrooms equipped with LCD projectors and a smart TV. The Geography Department has a good shine in the context of student’s placement and qualification for NET/ JRF and the joining of Ph.D. programs. Five Ph.D. awardee candidates are placed as Assistant Professors in different Higher education institutions, and the remaining candidates are teaching as Guest faculty in higher education institutions in different states. A dozen students are placed as PGT lecturers, and more than a dozen as primary teachers. A master's pass-out student qualified for the Odisha State public service examination and was placed as an administrative officer.
