About Department

Department of Chemistry, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University

The Department of Chemistry at Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) is one of the premier departments under the Faculty of Science, with a growing reputation and numerous national accolades. Established in 2009, the department encompasses all major branches of chemistry—including Inorganic, Organic, Physical, and Analytical Chemistry—and plays a vital role in both academic instruction and scientific research.

The department offers comprehensive chemistry education to undergraduate students enrolled in B.Sc. (Hons.) programs, as well as advanced courses for postgraduate (M.Sc.) students and doctoral (Ph.D.) research scholars. Alongside teaching, the department maintains a strong research profile, actively pursuing investigations in frontier areas such as nanoscience, catalysis, single-molecule magnets, molecular recognition and supramolecular chemistry, nanomaterials, magnetism and dielectrics, fuel cells, electrochemistry, and basic synthetic organic chemistry with special emphasis on asymmetric synthesis and catalysis.

Our faculty members are actively engaged in several sponsored research projects. Notably, the Department of Chemistry was the first department at IGNTU to receive the prestigious DST-FIST grant in 2017, significantly enhancing its research infrastructure and capabilities.

The department is equipped with dedicated Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry laboratories to support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. In addition, the department having an array of advanced analytical instruments, including:

  • Powder X-ray Diffractometer
  • UV-Visible Spectrophotometer
  • Fluorescence Spectrophotometer
  • FTIR Spectrophotometer
  • HPLC
  • Low-Temperature Bench-top Reaction Bath
  • Polarimeter etc.

We also maintain a well-resourced computer laboratory to support computational and data analysis needs.

The Department of Chemistry fosters a vibrant academic environment that encourages scientific inquiry, innovation, and collaborative learning. Our primary objective is to nurture high-quality human resources by providing a competitive yet supportive platform for academic and professional growth.

Over the years, our students have consistently excelled in national-level examinations such as JAM, GATE, and CSIR-NET, and many have secured admission to prestigious institutions like IISERs, IITs, NITs, and Central Universities for higher studies. Furthermore, several alumni have gone on to become assistant professors in various higher education institutions, while others have taken up key positions in government, semi-government, and private sectors.
