Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak

Department of Botany

About Department

Teaching at the department began in 2008 with temporary faculty in a rented hostel at Amarkantak, which subsequently moved to the newly established campus at Lalpur-Podki on 16th August 2011. Following the criteria of NEP-2020, the department offers a three-year undergraduate (UG), a four-year Research/Honours undergraduate (UG),  two-year post-graduate courses designed to provide knowledge on the plant diversity (bacteria to angiosperms), cell biology, genetics, plant physiology, plant ecology, as well as advanced knowledge in instrumentation skills, plant tissue culture techniques, and molecular biology. To cater to the special needs of the predominantly tribal population residing around the university, the curricula include papers on the safeguarding of plant-related traditional knowledge and the development of entrepreneurship skills amongst tribes.

PhD programmes are also offered in the department in the thrust areas like Plant-microbe interactions, Ecophysiology, Cyanobacterial Biology, Nanobiotechnology, Bioprospecting of Aromatic & Medicinal plants, and nutraceuticals, etc.

Based on the research excellence, the department has been recognized with the DST-FIST grant since 2020.

Professor Awadhesh Kumar Shukla served as the first head of the department (2012- Oct 2015), followed by Prof. Naveen Kumar Sharma (Oct/2015 - Oct/2018), Prof. Srinivasan T (Oct/18 - Oct/2021).
Currently, Dr. Ravindra Shukla chairs the department.
