Centre for Endangered Languages (CEL)

The Centre for Endangered Languages (CEL) is established at Indira Gandhi National Tribal University in the year 2015. The Centre is the Lead Cluster in the lead format as a consortium for the purpose of development of tribal language. The goal of the Centre is to undertake documentation and revitalization projects in the states with a tribal population of 50 lacs or above such as Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rajasthan.

The Centre started working on a project entitled “Endangered Languages Project” that was granted by UGC in the year 2015 on certain lines to prevent the endangerment and extinction of tribal languages by undertaking certain safeguards in to consideration, like documentation, recording, linguistic data analysis, etc., which will enhance the possibilities of tribal languages to be part of the mainstream by making these unwritten languages available in published and digitized form. The Centre is focused on studying the languages spoken by some indigenous communities in the central Indian state Madhya Pradesh and also in other states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rajasthan.
